What Is Name Numerology?

Name numerology is the branch of Pythagorean numerology that works with the letters of your name rather than your birth date. Every letter of the alphabet corresponds to a number from 1 to 9, and by calculating the numerical values within your name, you can uncover three distinct and revealing numbers: your Expression Number, your Soul Urge Number, and your Personality Number.

Numerologists always recommend using your full name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate — not a nickname, married name, or chosen name. This is the name your soul chose as the vehicle for this lifetime, and it encodes specific potentials and patterns you are here to work with.

The Three Name Numbers Explained

Your Expression Number (also called the Destiny Number) is calculated from all the letters in your full birth name. It represents your natural talents, abilities, and the overall direction your life is intended to express.

Your Soul Urge Number (also called Heart's Desire) is calculated from only the vowel letters (A, E, I, O, U) in your name. It reveals what your soul truly wants — your deepest motivations, inner desires, and what genuinely brings you joy.

Your Personality Number is calculated from only the consonant letters in your name. It represents the face you show the world — the qualities others perceive about you before they know you deeply.

The Pythagorean Letter Chart

The Pythagorean system assigns numbers to letters as follows:

1: A, J, S | 2: B, K, T | 3: C, L, U | 4: D, M, V | 5: E, N, W | 6: F, O, X | 7: G, P, Y | 8: H, Q, Z | 9: I, R

Each name is calculated by summing the values of its letters, then reducing to a single digit while preserving Master Numbers (11, 22, 33). First names, middle names, and last names are each reduced separately, then combined.

Frequently Asked Questions

Always use your full name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate for the most accurate numerological reading. Numerologists believe this is the name that encodes your soul's blueprint for this lifetime.

Y is numerology's most debated letter. In our calculator, Y is treated as a consonant by default (counted in the Personality Number), but you can switch it to vowel treatment (counted in the Soul Urge Number) using the toggle. This gives you both perspectives on your reading.

Expression Number and Destiny Number are two names for the same calculation — the sum of all letters in your full birth name, reduced to a single digit or Master Number. Different numerology traditions use different terminology for the same concept.

Our calculator automatically normalizes accented characters — é becomes E, ü becomes U, and so on. This is consistent with Pythagorean numerology, which is designed for the A-Z Latin alphabet.

Yes — in fact, when these numbers align, many numerologists consider it a sign of particular clarity and coherence in your life direction. When they differ, the contrast between your life path and your natural expression creates a productive tension.
